hopcat in ann arbor: dinner and a show
Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, HopCat Beer Bar is the most popular spot in town for the University of Michigan college students. Management reached out to me to cover the blank yellow wall stretching across the main dining room.
Taking inspiration from the energy in the downtown area, I designed a mural that would bring the wall to life in the dining room. I chose to incorporate local references to Michigan, major league sports teams, and hidden symbols for guests to find within the artwork.
Excited to see the reaction from all of their loyal customers, management left the restaurant open while I painted and only closed off the section of my mural. For two nights, I painted live for all of the guests to see the mural come to life. Some guests stayed and had an extra drink or ordered dessert just to see the finishing touches get put on.
My favorite comment came from one of the waitresses, “It looks like it was always supposed to be here.”
